Whiplash as any who has suffered from it will tell you can be a very painful condition. It is caused when the head and the neck are subjected to a violent acceleration-deceleration force. The most common cause of whiplash is in car accidents although it can also happen playing sports or even head banging (rock fans beware!). If you have suffered an injury of this type in a car crash whiplash injury claims solicitors can help you to claim the compensation you deserve.

If you have received a whiplash injury in a car crash you should immediately seek medical attention. Sometimes the symptoms of whiplash will not be felt for a day or two after the crash. Some of the symptoms include:

Neck pain and stiffness

Back pain and stiffness

Headaches

Dizziness

Fatigue

Visual disturbances

The way whiplash injuries are treated has changed enormously in recent years. It used to be common medical practice to immobilise the neck area with the use of neck braces and surgical collars. However it is now accepted that the best way to deal with injuries of this type is to keep the area as mobile as possible. The use of neck braces has been shown to lead to chronic conditions and lengthen the recovery process considerably.

Following the injury it is advisable to rest for a day or two with an ice pack applied to the affected area. Once any swelling has gone down you can start to gently exercise the muscles in the neck to help speed up recovery. Avoid and strenuous activities such as playing sports and heavy lifting. It is also advisable to avoid standing or sitting in one position for too long as this can cause the muscles in the neck to tighten up and stiffen.
